Car Not Starting? What to Do, Step by Step (Delhi NCR Guide)

Clicking sound, no sound, or the engine cranks but will not fire? How to work out why your car is not starting, what you can safely try yourself, and when to call a mechanic.

Quick answer: most cars that will not start have a weak or dead battery, a loose battery terminal, an empty fuel tank or a faulty starter motor. Listen to what happens when you turn the key or press the start button, because the sound tells you where the problem is.

1. Listen First: What Happens When You Turn the Key?

  • Rapid clicking, dim dashboard lights: the battery is too weak to turn the engine. This is the most common case, especially after a cold night, a hot summer day or several days parked.
  • Complete silence, no lights: the battery is completely flat or a terminal has come loose or corroded.
  • One loud click, lights stay bright: the battery is fine but the starter motor or its relay may have failed.
  • Engine turns over but will not fire: look at fuel (empty tank, failed fuel pump), the immobiliser key, or spark plugs and sensors.

2. Safe Things You Can Check Yourself

  1. Automatic cars: make sure the gear lever is in P and your foot is on the brake.
  2. Push-start cars: if the dashboard says the key is not detected, hold the key fob against the start button. The fob battery may be weak.
  3. Check the fuel gauge. A reading close to empty on a slope can starve the pump.
  4. Look at the battery terminals. White or green powder means corrosion. Do not touch them with bare hands.
  5. Switch off everything (AC, lights, music) and try once more. Do not keep cranking for more than 10 seconds at a time, or you will drain the battery further.

3. Should I Jump-Start the Car Myself?

You can, but modern BS6, automatic and hybrid cars have sensitive electronics. Connecting cables in the wrong order, or using another running car with voltage spikes, can damage control units that cost far more than a battery. A regulated jump-starter used on the manufacturer’s jump points is the safer option.

4. When to Call a Mechanic

  • The car does not start after one or two careful attempts.
  • You smell fuel or see smoke.
  • The battery is more than 3 years old, or this has happened before in the last month.
  • You are in a basement, on a highway shoulder or anywhere you do not feel safe.
